Airline System
Air Transport Oversight System (ATOS)
By collecting and analyzing data on the many airline systems, FAA inspectors are better able to target areas for improvement. Congress' General Accounting Office, the National Transportation Safety Board and the airlines agree with our approach. ATOS already has yielded benefits: It has enabled us to create a targeted, more effective surveillance plan. Our goals are to assure that safety standards are met and to get ahead of issues that could potentially lead to the next accident. ATOS is a work in progress, working to ensure the American public will see even safer skies through the FAA's implementation of ATOS.
System Approach for Safety Oversight (SASO) Program
SASO is a multi-year program to redesign the oversight processes of the FAA Flight Standards Service and US aviation industry in order to achieve the highest level of safety and efficiency.
Program Goal:
SASO will transform the AFS and the aviation industry to a national standard of system safety by implementing a comprehensive set of world class system safety practices. SASO will achieve this goal by:
- Sharing data, processes, and tools between the FAA and industry
- Creating a learning organization of skilled FAA professionals
- Empowering Industry with more responsibility for safety management
- Facilitating system safety based regulatory reform
- Ensuring the most cost effective use of AFS and industry resources
