Flight Suits

The flight suit is a one-piece jumpsuit with a single zipper from neck to waist in the front. Pressure gloves, which allow for great dexterity for pilots, are attached by a soft pressure seal apparently incorporated in the sleeves. The pilot's helmet is connected to the suit by a hard seal collar. Flight suits are designed to keep the wearer warm, as well as for being practical and durable. A military flight suit may also show rank insignia.

As aviation developed, the need for warm clothing became evident. Various types of flight jackets were gaining popularity, and during World War II, leather flights suits came in use. The need for fireproofness also arose at that time. Thus appeared fireproof helmets, masks, goggles, gloves and footwear. It was also easier to make a one-piece suit when it would potentially have to fit over existing clothing or different types of under-garments.

Then appeared the G-suit – a special kind of flight suit that protected the wearer from the physical stress of acceleration.

In the 1950s and 1960s there came a need for even more specialized suits for high-altitude and space flights.

Today's Flight Suits

The current flight suit that is standard for most Air Forces is made of Nomex. The flame retardant capability of this material makes it great for protecting aviators in case of a fire. The suits often come in green colors, but color and style vary greatly depending on the country.

Space Flight Suits

Space flight suits are made of a fire-retardant material, and are combined with a G-suit and during all or part of the flight, a fully pressurized space suit.

Astronauts use several colors of flight suits. For instance, NASA crews wear blue suits during a mission. They wear orange suits when they launch and land, as the color helps them with emergency recovery. White suits are worn during space walks in order to control temperature.

Flight Suits for Children

Flight suit for children may be a great gift idea for your kid, and be sure that your son or daughter will really appreciate such a present.

For instance, children's air force type suits are Poly or Cotton, and come with 2 way zippers, leg zippers, adjustable waist and cuffs. The suits come in various sizes, so you'll definitely be able to choose one that will suit your kid!
